Synopsis – What to Expect from “Lost in America”
Lost in America is a 1985 American comedy-drama film directed by Albert Brooks and co-written by Brooks with Monica Johnson. The film stars Brooks alongside Julie Hagerty and features supporting performances from Garry Marshall, Robert Loggia, and Joe Pantoliano.
The film follows a successful yuppie couple, David and Linda Howard (Brooks and Hagerty), who decide to drop out of the rat race and live out their dream of traveling across America in a Winnebago. After selling their possessions and quitting their jobs, the couple embarks on their journey, only to find themselves completely out of their depth.
The couple soon find themselves struggling to cope with their newfound freedom. They are overwhelmed by the crowds and unfamiliarity of the places they visit, and find themselves unable to adjust to the nomadic lifestyle. As their funds quickly dwindle, David and Linda are forced to confront their own shortcomings and the reality of their situation.
The couple eventually find themselves in Las Vegas, where David impulsively gambles away their entire savings. With nothing left to their name, the couple is forced to reassess their lives and decide what to do next.
Lost in America is a humorous and heartfelt examination of the American dream and the pitfalls of chasing it. It is a story of self-discovery and the realization that sometimes the best things in life are not always the most obvious.
