Synopsis – What to Expect from “Lost Horizon”
Lost Horizon is a classic 1937 American drama film directed by Frank Capra and based on the 1933 James Hilton novel of the same name. The film tells the story of a group of British diplomats, soldiers, and civilians who are stranded in the Himalayas after a plane crash. They stumble upon a mysterious valley called Shangri-La, where they are welcomed by the wise and benevolent High Lama. The High Lama reveals to them that the inhabitants of the valley have managed to maintain a utopian lifestyle for centuries, free from the ravages of war and disease.
The High Lama offers the survivors the chance to remain in Shangri-La, but they must first learn the philosophy of the valley and accept its way of life. The survivors are initially skeptical, but eventually come to understand the value of the utopian lifestyle in Shangri-La. They decide to remain in the valley, and are soon joined by a new arrival, a beautiful young woman named Gloria Stone.
Gloria reveals that she has been searching for Shangri-La for many years, and is determined to stay in the valley and learn its ways. Meanwhile, the outside world is in turmoil as the Second World War looms on the horizon. The survivors must decide whether to remain in Shangri-La, or to return to the outside world and fight for their freedom.
