Synopsis – What to Expect from “Losing Isaiah”
Losing Isaiah is a 1995 drama directed by Stephen Gyllenhaal and starring Jessica Lange and Halle Berry. The film follows the story of two women, Margaret Lewin (Jessica Lange), a white social worker, and Khaila Richards (Halle Berry), an African-American woman, and their battle over the custody of a young boy, Isaiah (David Ramsey).
When Margaret first meets Isaiah, he is a three-year-old living in a Chicago ghetto with his mother, Khaila. Khaila is an addict struggling to make ends meet, and when she is arrested for drug possession, Isaiah is placed in a foster home. Margaret, who works for the Department of Children and Family Services, takes Isaiah under her wing and decides to adopt him.
Khaila, meanwhile, is determined to get Isaiah back and begins a long and difficult legal battle with Margaret. Khaila is aided by her lawyer, Louis (Samuel L. Jackson), who believes that Khaila is a fit mother and should be allowed to raise Isaiah.
The two women battle in court for months, with both sides presenting compelling arguments. In the end, the court decides that Isaiah should remain with Margaret, but that Khaila should be given visitation rights.
