The film follows a former convict, Mitchel (Farrell), who is released from prison and moves to London. He quickly finds work as a bodyguard for a reclusive young actress, Charlotte (Knightley). Mitchel soon discovers that Charlotte is being stalked by a dangerous gangster, Gant (Winstone).
As Mitchel and Charlotte’s relationship grows, Gant’s threats become more and more menacing. Mitchel must protect Charlotte from Gant’s thugs while also dealing with his own criminal past.
Meanwhile, Mitchel’s friend, Billy (Thewlis), is a small-time criminal who is trying to go straight, but is constantly dragged back into the underworld by his old associates. Mitchel and Billy’s friendship is tested when Billy is caught up in a heist gone wrong and Mitchel must decide whether to help his friend or stay loyal to Charlotte.
