Synopsis – What to Expect from “Local Hero”
Local Hero is a beloved 1983 British comedy-drama set in the small Scottish town of Ferness. It tells the story of an American oil company executive, Mac MacIntyre (Burt Lancaster), who is sent to Scotland to purchase the entire village in order to build an oil refinery. Upon arriving in Ferness, Mac is immediately taken with the quaintness of the town and its people. He quickly befriends the locals, including the eccentric and lovable pub owner Ben Knox (Peter Riegert).
Mac’s mission to purchase the town is complicated by the fact that the locals are not interested in selling their beloved homes. He begins to understand the importance of the town to its residents and begins to appreciate the beauty of the area. He also begins to develop feelings for a local girl, Marina (Jenny Seagrove).
Meanwhile, the company’s CEO, Felix Happer (Fulton Mackay), is determined to get the land and sends an eccentric assistant, Danny Oldsen (Peter Capaldi), to help Mac. Danny’s arrival causes further complications, as he is determined to get the deal done and is willing to do whatever it takes.
The film follows Mac as he navigates between the demands of his company and his desire to protect the town and its people. In the end, Mac is able to find a way to protect the town while also satisfying his company. The film ends with Mac and Marina getting married
