Lizzie Borden Took an Ax is a 2014 biographical drama film directed by Nick Gomez. The film stars Christina Ricci as the titular Lizzie Borden, who is accused and tried for the 1892 axe murders of her father and stepmother.
The film begins with Lizzie Borden, a 32-year-old spinster living in Fall River, Massachusetts, in 1892. After her father Andrew and stepmother Abby are found brutally murdered in their home, Lizzie is arrested and charged with their deaths. Lizzie’s older sister Emma (Clea DuVall) and brother William (Cole Hauser) stand by her side, but the townspeople are quick to judge her for the crime.
As the trial begins, the audience is taken back in time to Lizzie’s childhood, where we learn of her strained relationship with her father and stepmother, as well as the abuse she suffered at their hands. We also learn of the various secrets and lies that the Borden family kept hidden throughout their lives.
Throughout the trial, Lizzie’s lawyer, Andrew Jennings (Billy Campbell), attempts to prove her innocence, while the prosecutor, Hosea Knowlton (John Heard), attempts to prove her guilt. As the trial progresses, more secrets and lies are revealed, and the audience is left to wonder if Lizzie is truly innocent or guilty of the crime.
