Synopsis – What to Expect from “Lion of the Desert”
Lion of the Desert is a 1981 historical war drama film directed by Moustapha Akkad. The film stars Anthony Quinn, Oliver Reed, and Rod Steiger.
The film is set in the early 1930s, during the reign of Italian dictator Benito Mussolini. In Libya, a Bedouin tribe led by Omar Mukhtar (Anthony Quinn) is determined to fight against the Italian forces that have invaded their homeland. Despite being outmanned and outgunned, Mukhtar and his people refuse to surrender and instead use guerilla tactics to fight the Italian forces.
The Italian forces are led by General Rodolfo Graziani (Rod Steiger), who is determined to crush the Bedouin resistance. Graziani employs a scorched-earth policy, destroying villages and executing anyone who stands in his way. He also orders the deportation of thousands of people to concentration camps.
Mukhtar and his forces continue to fight the Italian forces, despite the overwhelming odds. He is aided by the British diplomat, Major William Foster (Oliver Reed), who is sympathetic to the plight of the Bedouins and helps them in their fight.
The film follows Mukhtar and his people as they fight against the Italian forces, and their courage and determination despite the odds. In the end, Mukhtar and his people are able to win a major victory against the Italian forces and secure their freedom.
