Synopsis – What to Expect from “Limelight”
Limelight is a 1952 British-American drama film directed by Charles Chaplin. It stars Chaplin, Claire Bloom, and Buster Keaton, and tells the story of a fading music hall comedian’s effort to help a despondent ballet dancer.
The film begins in London in the year 1914, with Calvero (Chaplin), a once-famous music hall comedian, now a washed-up alcoholic. He is living in a rundown boarding house and performing in small clubs to make ends meet. One night, he saves a despondent young woman, Terry (Bloom), from throwing herself off a bridge. He takes her back to his boarding house and she reveals that she is a ballet dancer who has been forced to quit due to a leg injury.
Calvero helps Terry to regain her self-confidence and she begins to dance again. He also helps her to find a job in a café, where she is soon the star attraction. Meanwhile, Calvero’s own career begins to revive as he performs in a variety show.
However, when Terry discovers that Calvero is still drinking, she leaves him and moves in with a wealthy friend. Calvero is heartbroken and his career begins to decline once again. Terry eventually returns and helps Calvero to regain his confidence and his career.
The film ends with Calvero and Terry performing a dance routine together, and the audience giving them a standing ovation
