Synopsis – What to Expect from “Lifeboat”
Lifeboat is a 1944 American drama film directed by Alfred Hitchcock and starring Tallulah Bankhead, William Bendix, Walter Slezak, Mary Anderson, and John Hodiak. The film follows a group of survivors from a torpedoed British merchant ship who are stranded in a lifeboat in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean during World War II.
The film opens with the sinking of the British merchant ship, the SS S/S Calypso. A small group of survivors, including journalist Constance Porter (Tallulah Bankhead), engineer Stanley Garrett (William Bendix), German U-boat captain Willi (Walter Slezak), nurse Alice (Mary Anderson), and sailor Kovac (John Hodiak), manage to escape in a lifeboat.
The group soon discovers that there is not enough food or water on board to last the entire journey to safety. As tensions rise, the group is also forced to grapple with the moral dilemma of whether or not to save the German captain who was responsible for sinking their ship.
The group soon finds themselves in a battle for survival against the elements, as well as the German U-boat that continues to follow them. They must also come to terms with the fact that they may never be rescued and must rely on their own resourcefulness and courage to make it back alive.
As the group fights for survival, they also come to understand each other better and find a way to live together
