Synopsis – What to Expect from “Life as a House”
Life as a House is a 2001 American drama film directed by Irwin Winkler and starring Kevin Kline, Kristin Scott Thomas, Hayden Christensen, and Jena Malone. The film tells the story of a man struggling with his life and his relationships with his family.
George (Kevin Kline) is a middle-aged man who has been living a life of quiet desperation. He is divorced from his wife Robin (Kristin Scott Thomas) and estranged from his son Sam (Hayden Christensen). He works a dead-end job and spends his days in a state of quiet despair.
When George discovers he has terminal cancer, he decides to make the most of his remaining time and build a dream house for his family. He enlists the help of Sam, who is struggling with his own issues, and the two begin to rebuild their relationship as they build the house.
Meanwhile, Robin is struggling to move on with her life and finds herself drawn to a new man, Peter (Jamey Sheridan). As their relationship develops, Robin is forced to confront her feelings for George and her desire to start a new life.
The film follows George and Sam as they build the house and as George comes to terms with his impending death. Along the way, the two of them learn to appreciate each other and confront the issues that have kept them apart for so long. In the end, George is able to find peace and acceptance as he faces his mortality.
