Synopsis – What to Expect from “Letter from an Unknown Woman”
Letter from an Unknown Woman is a 1948 romantic drama directed by Max Ophüls. It tells the story of Lisa Berndle, an Austrian woman who falls in love with the famous pianist Stefan Brand.
The film begins with a voiceover from Lisa, who is writing a letter to Stefan. She explains that she has loved him since she was a young girl, and she has never forgotten him.
The story then jumps to the past, when Lisa was a young girl living with her mother in a small Austrian village. She meets Stefan when he comes to visit the village and falls in love with him immediately. Despite her mother’s warnings, she follows him to Vienna and begins a passionate affair.
In Vienna, Lisa and Stefan live together, and she gives up her dreams of becoming a great pianist to be with him. However, their relationship is strained when Stefan discovers that Lisa is pregnant with his child. He refuses to marry her and abandons her.
Devastated, Lisa moves back to her mother’s house and gives birth to a son. She raises him alone, but never stops loving Stefan. Years later, Stefan returns to Vienna and Lisa is determined to make him acknowledge their child.
The film follows Lisa as she attempts to win back the love of Stefan, and eventually succeeds in her goal. However, the ending is bittersweet as Stefan is killed in a car accident before they can be reunited. Lisa is
