Synopsis/Plot
Les Misérables is a sweeping epic musical drama based on the classic novel by Victor Hugo. Set in 19th-century France, the film follows the story of Jean Valjean, a former prisoner who has been released from prison after serving 19 years for stealing a loaf of bread to feed his starving sister and her family. Despite being granted his freedom, Valjean is unable to find work due to his criminal record and is forced to live on the streets. When he is taken in by a kindly bishop, Valjean is so moved by the bishop’s generosity that he repays him by stealing his silver. Valjean is soon caught and brought before the police, but the bishop lies to protect him and Valjean is able to escape.
Valjean is determined to turn his life around and begins a new life as a factory owner and mayor of a small town. However, his past catches up with him when he is tracked down by police inspector Javert, who is determined to bring him to justice. Valjean must flee and take on a new identity to protect himself and the people he loves. Along the way, he meets a variety of characters, including the ill-fated Fantine
