Synopsis – What to Expect from “Learning to Drive”
Learning to Drive is a 2014 comedy-drama film starring Patricia Clarkson and Ben Kingsley. The film follows the story of Wendy Shields (Clarkson), a middle-aged book editor living in New York City who finds herself at a crossroads in her life. After her husband leaves her, Wendy decides to take up the challenge of learning to drive.
Wendy’s teacher is Darwan Singh Tur (Kingsley), a Sikh Indian immigrant and cab driver who is teaching her to drive in his spare time. Despite their differences in culture and background, the two quickly form a bond and Darwan helps Wendy to gain the confidence she needs to drive.
As the two spend time together, Wendy begins to open up to Darwan and share her story about the breakdown of her marriage. She also learns about Darwan’s past and his struggles as a refugee. Through their conversations, Wendy and Darwan learn to accept and appreciate each other.
At the same time, Wendy begins to open up to the possibilities of a new life and a new relationship. She starts to date again and develops a relationship with a man named Ted. As she continues to learn to drive, Wendy discovers a newfound freedom and independence.
In the end, Wendy is able to find the courage to take control of her life and make the changes she needs to move forward. Through her new driving skills, she is able to drive away from her old life and into a new one
