Synopsis – What to Expect from “Last Flag Flying”
Last Flag Flying follows the story of three Vietnam War veterans, Larry “Doc” Shepherd, Sal Nealon, and Richard Mueller, who reunite after 30 years to honor the death of Doc’s son, a young Marine killed in the Iraq War.
The men, all former Marines, embark on a road trip to Arlington National Cemetery to bury Doc’s son. Along the way, they reminisce about their shared experiences in the war and the lives they have lived since. They also discuss the current conflict in Iraq and the political climate in the United States.
The three men confront their own personal demons as they make their way to Arlington. Sal is a recovering alcoholic, while Mueller is a religious man struggling to make sense of the death of his son in the same war. Doc is haunted by the death of his son and his own guilt over not being there for him.
When the three men finally reach Arlington, they are met with a solemn ceremony that honors the fallen. In a touching moment, Doc is presented with his son’s flag and is given the chance to say goodbye.
The movie ends with the three men having come to terms with their respective losses and having found a renewed sense of purpose in honoring the fallen. The movie is a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made by those who have served our country and the importance of remembering those who have died in service.
