Synopsis – What to Expect from “Knock Down the House”
Knock Down the House is a 2019 documentary that follows four women from across the United States who are challenging the status quo in their respective congressional districts.
The film begins with Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a bartender from the Bronx, New York who is running for Congress against a powerful incumbent. We follow her as she campaigns, meets with her constituents, and goes door-to-door to get her message out. She faces long odds and a lot of opposition, but her passion and commitment to her cause never waver.
The documentary then moves to West Virginia, where we meet Paula Jean Swearengin, a coal miner’s daughter who is running for the Senate. We see her fight to bring attention to the environmental damage caused by coal mining and her determination to give her state a brighter future.
The third woman profiled in the film is Amy Vilela, a Nevada businesswoman who is running for Congress after the death of her daughter due to a lack of health insurance. We witness her tireless efforts to bring attention to the issue of healthcare access and her commitment to making sure no other family has to go through what she went through.
The final woman featured is Cori Bush, a nurse and single mother from St. Louis, Missouri who is running for Congress. We see her work to bring attention to the issues facing her community, from police brutality to poverty, and her dedication to making sure her voice is heard
