Synopsis – What to Expect from “Kings”
Kings is a 2017 drama set in South Central Los Angeles in the days leading up to the 1992 Rodney King trial. The story follows Millie, a single mother of two, as she struggles to keep her family together amidst the turmoil of the city.
The film opens with Millie (Halle Berry) and her two children, 16-year-old Jesse (Daniel Craig) and 8-year-old Emily (Lana Young), living in a small apartment in South Central. Millie works hard to make ends meet, but her neighborhood is plagued by violence and poverty.
When the news of the Rodney King trial begins to spread, the tension in the city increases. Millie is determined to keep her family safe and to protect them from the violence that is erupting in the streets. She works to build a community of support around her family, but her efforts are met with resistance from both her neighbors and the police.
Meanwhile, Jesse is struggling to come to terms with his identity as a black man living in a predominantly white, affluent neighborhood. He is drawn to the protests and rallies that are happening around the city, and finds himself caught in the middle of the violence that is erupting in the streets.
As the trial progresses, the tension in the city reaches a boiling point. Millie must make a difficult decision as to whether or not to stay in South Central, or to move her family away from the violence and turmoil.
