Synopsis – What to Expect from “King Rat”
King Rat is a 1965 British drama film directed by Bryan Forbes and starring George Segal, James Fox, Tom Courtenay, John Mills, and John Hurt.
The film follows a group of Allied prisoners of war held captive in a Japanese prison camp in Singapore during World War II. The prisoners, led by the American Corporal King (George Segal), are determined to survive and do whatever it takes to make it through their ordeal.
King quickly rises to a position of power and influence among his fellow prisoners, using his cunning and wit to manipulate the camp’s hierarchy in his favor. He is able to secure better food, better living conditions, and even a few luxuries for himself and his comrades.
Meanwhile, the prisoners must also contend with the sadistic camp commandant, Captain Tanaka (John Hurt), who enjoys tormenting and punishing the prisoners. King must also battle against his own personal demons, as he struggles with the guilt of surviving the war while his friends and family have all perished.
As the war comes to an end, the prisoners must decide whether to stay in the camp or attempt an escape. Ultimately, King and his comrades make a daring escape, but not without a few casualties. In the end, King is able to find some peace and solace in the knowledge that he and his friends have survived the war.
