Synopsis – What to Expect from “Kes”
Kes is a 1969 British drama film directed by Ken Loach. It is based on the novel A Kestrel for a Knave by Barry Hines. The film tells the story of Billy Casper, a 15-year-old working-class boy living in a mining town in northern England. Billy is an outsider at school and is constantly bullied by his peers and teachers. He finds solace in caring for a kestrel, a small falcon, which he names Kes.
The film follows Billy as he struggles to come to terms with his difficult home life and his feelings of alienation at school. He forms a strong bond with Kes, training her to hunt and fly. As his relationship with the bird grows, Billy begins to find a sense of purpose and identity.
However, Billy’s newfound sense of freedom is threatened when his teacher, Mr. Farthing, discovers the bird and confiscates it. Billy is determined to get his beloved Kes back, and he embarks on a journey of self-discovery to reclaim her. Along the way, he learns the importance of friendship, loyalty, and standing up for what is right.
Kes is a powerful and moving story about growing up, finding your place in the world, and learning to be true to yourself. It is an inspiring tale of hope and courage that will stay with viewers long after the credits roll.
