Synopsis – What to Expect from “Jungle Fever”
Jungle Fever is a 1991 drama directed by Spike Lee. It follows Flipper Purify (Wesley Snipes), an African-American architect living in New York City who begins an interracial relationship with Angie Tucci (Annabella Sciorra), an Italian-American secretary.
The film opens with Flipper and Angie’s first meeting. Flipper is immediately attracted to her, and the two begin a passionate affair. Despite the disapproval of their families and friends, Flipper and Angie continue their relationship. Flipper’s brother Gator (Samuel L. Jackson) is particularly vocal about his disapproval, and his disapproval only intensifies when he discovers that Flipper and Angie are sleeping together.
Meanwhile, Flipper’s marriage to Drew (Lonette McKee) is beginning to unravel. As the relationship between Flipper and Angie deepens, Flipper and Drew’s marriage deteriorates. Eventually, Flipper and Angie move in together, further straining Flipper’s relationship with his family.
As Flipper and Angie navigate the challenges of their relationship, they must also contend with the racism and prejudice they face from their family, friends, and society at large. Flipper’s father (Ossie Davis) is particularly vocal in his disapproval of the relationship, and Flipper is forced to confront his own internalized racism.
