Synopsis – What to Expect from “Jakob the Liar”
Jakob the Liar is a 1999 American drama film directed by Peter Kassovitz and starring Robin Williams. The film is about a Jewish shopkeeper living in a Nazi-occupied Polish town who uses a radio to give the townspeople hope by telling them of imaginary news from the outside world.
The film begins in 1944, in the Jewish ghetto of a Nazi-occupied Polish town. Jakob Heym (Robin Williams) is a Jewish shopkeeper who is struggling to survive under the Nazi occupation. One day, Jakob overhears a radio broadcast from the outside world, and he spreads the news to the other Jews in the ghetto, telling them that the Russians are advancing and that they will soon be liberated.
The news spreads quickly, and soon the entire ghetto is filled with hope. To keep up the morale, Jakob continues to make up stories about the progress of the Russian army, and the townspeople begin to believe that the war is almost over.
Meanwhile, the Nazi authorities become suspicious of Jakob’s activities, and they send in a Gestapo officer to investigate. The Gestapo officer interrogates Jakob, but he is unable to get any information out of him.
The townspeople, meanwhile, begin to organize a resistance movement, and they plan to use Jakob’s stories as a source of inspiration. The Gestapo officer, however, discovers the truth about Jakob’s stories, and
