Synopsis – What to Expect from “Ivanhoe”
Ivanhoe is a 1982 British-American historical adventure film directed by Douglas Camfield and produced by Hal Wallis. It is based on the novel of the same name by Sir Walter Scott.
The story takes place in 12th century England, during the reign of King Richard the Lionheart. Sir Wilfred of Ivanhoe (Robert Taylor) is a Saxon knight who is determined to restore justice and freedom to England. He is in love with Lady Rowena (Olivia Hussey), the ward of his father, Cedric (Maximilian Schell).
Ivanhoe rallies Saxons and Normans alike in an attempt to overthrow the tyrannical rule of Prince John (Christopher Lee). Meanwhile, the Saxon Lady Rowena is betrothed to the Norman knight, Sir Brian de Bois-Guilbert (George Sanders). Ivanhoe must battle his rival for Rowena’s affections, as well as battle for the freedom of England.
The film culminates in a climactic tournament, where Ivanhoe and Bois-Guilbert battle for the hand of Rowena. Ivanhoe emerges victorious and is reunited with his beloved Lady Rowena. The Saxons are freed from the oppressive rule of Prince John and England is once again free.
