Synopsis – What to Expect from “Irrational Man”
Irrational Man is a 2015 American mystery drama film starring Joaquin Phoenix, Emma Stone, Jamie Blackley, and Parker Posey. It is written and directed by Woody Allen.
The movie follows Abe Lucas (Phoenix), an existentialist philosophy professor who is in a deep state of depression. His personal life is in disarray and he is struggling to find meaning in his life. In an attempt to find some sort of purpose, Abe begins to develop a relationship with one of his students, Jill (Stone).
Meanwhile, Abe is drawn to a murder case that is being discussed in one of his classes. After hearing the details of the case, Abe comes to the conclusion that the only way to find meaning in his life is to commit a murder. He hatches a plan to kill a local judge who is corrupt and has been getting away with his crimes for years.
Jill is initially unaware of Abe’s plan and is only concerned with trying to help him out of his depression. However, as Abe’s plan progresses, she slowly discovers what he’s up to and is torn between her feelings for him and her moral obligations.
The movie follows Abe as he attempts to carry out his plan, all while struggling to come to terms with his own mortality. Along the way, he discovers that sometimes life’s greatest tragedies can also be its greatest blessings.
