Synopsis/Plot
Invictus is a 2009 biographical sports drama film directed by Clint Eastwood and starring Morgan Freeman and Matt Damon. The film tells the inspiring story of how Nelson Mandela, played by Morgan Freeman, used the 1995 Rugby World Cup to unite South Africa in a time of racial tension.
The film opens with Nelson Mandela’s release from prison after 27 years of imprisonment for his anti-apartheid activities. After his release, Mandela is elected President of South Africa and is faced with the task of unifying a nation that is deeply divided along racial lines. He then turns to the 1995 Rugby World Cup, which is to be hosted in South Africa, as a way to bring the country together.
He meets with the captain of the South African rugby team, Francois Pienaar, played by Matt Damon, and encourages him to believe in the team and to strive for victory. With Mandela’s support, the team begins to gain confidence and eventually makes it to the finals of the World Cup.
The film culminates in the final match between South Africa and New Zealand. The South African team, inspired by Mandela’s words, puts up a valiant effort and eventually wins the match, unifying the nation.
