Synopsis – What to Expect from “Intolerance: Love’s Struggle Throughout the Ages”
Intolerance: Love’s Struggle Throughout the Ages is a silent film released in 1916. It tells the story of four different time periods, each of which is connected by a common theme of intolerance.
The first story takes place in ancient Babylon, where a young mountain girl named The Mountain Girl (Mae Marsh) is in love with a soldier, The Young Warrior (Robert Harron). When the high priest of the city orders the death of the soldier, The Mountain Girl is left to fend for herself. She is eventually rescued by a prince, The Prince of Babylon (Alfred Paget), and the two fall in love. However, their love is forbidden by their respective families, and the two must fight for their right to be together.
The second story takes place in Judea during the time of Jesus. Here, a young couple, The Bride (Lillian Gish) and The Carpenter (Howard Gaye) are in love, but the Carpenter is sentenced to death for his beliefs. The Bride is determined to save him, and she is eventually successful in doing so.
The third story takes place in 16th century France, where a young woman, The Martyr (Margery Wilson), is in love with a Huguenot (John Bowers). The two are persecuted for their beliefs, and The Martyr is eventually sentenced to death. The Huguenot is determined to save her, and he eventually succeeds.
