Synopsis – What to Expect from “Into the Inferno”
Into the Inferno is a 2016 documentary film directed by Werner Herzog and Clive Oppenheimer. The film follows Herzog and Oppenheimer as they explore the culture and mythology surrounding active volcanoes in Indonesia, Ethiopia, Iceland, North Korea, and Vanuatu.
The film begins with Herzog and Oppenheimer in Indonesia, where they explore the culture and mythology of the volcanoes of Java and the surrounding area. They meet with local shamans and spiritual leaders to learn about the spiritual significance of the volcanoes in the region and the people’s relationship to them.
The two then travel to Ethiopia, where they explore the Erta Ale volcano and the Afar people who live near it. They meet with a local Afar leader to learn about the Afar’s spiritual beliefs and practices.
Next, Herzog and Oppenheimer travel to Iceland, where they explore the culture and mythology of the volcanoes in the region. They visit the Eyjafjallajökull volcano, which caused an international air travel disruption in 2010.
The two then travel to North Korea to explore the culture and mythology of the country’s active volcanoes. They meet with locals to learn about the spiritual significance of the volcanoes in North Korea and the people’s relationship to them.
Finally, Herzog and Oppenheimer travel to Vanuatu, where they explore the culture and mythology of the volcanoes
