Synopsis – What to Expect from “Instinct”
Instinct is a 1999 psychological thriller directed by Jon Turteltaub and starring Anthony Hopkins, Cuba Gooding Jr., and Donald Sutherland. The film follows Dr. Ethan Powell (Hopkins), a celebrated anthropologist who has been missing for two years in the African jungle. Powell is found in a state of shock and is brought back to the United States to stand trial for the murder of two park rangers.
Dr. Theo Caulder (Sutherland), a renowned psychiatrist, is assigned to evaluate Powell and determine his mental state. Caulder discovers that Powell has become a shell of his former self, and that he has lost all sense of reality. In order to understand Powell’s behavior, Caulder begins to explore the depths of his mind, and soon discovers the reason for his violent actions. Powell had been living in the jungle with a group of gorillas, and had learned to communicate with them. He had come to believe that he was one of them, and that he was protecting the gorillas from poachers.
Caulder is sympathetic towards Powell, and begins to believe that he may not be guilty of the murders. He sets out to prove Powell’s innocence in court, and is aided by his former student, Dr. Susan McAlester (Gooding Jr.). Together, they must unravel the truth behind Powell’s actions and prove that he was only trying to protect the gorillas.
