Synopsis – What to Expect from “In the Valley of Elah”
In the Valley of Elah is a 2007 crime drama that follows the story of a father’s desperate search for his missing son, a soldier recently returned from Iraq.
The film begins with Hank Deerfield (Tommy Lee Jones), a retired military investigator, receiving a call from the Army informing him that his son, Mike, has gone missing. Hank immediately travels to the base where Mike was stationed and begins to investigate.
At the base, Hank meets with Mike’s commanding officer, Lt. Kirklander (Jonathan Tucker), who tells him that Mike had been acting strangely and had been involved in an altercation with another soldier the night before his disappearance. With the help of a local police detective named Emily Sanders (Charlize Theron), Hank begins to unravel the mystery of his son’s disappearance.
The investigation leads Hank and Emily to a nearby small town, where they discover that Mike had been involved in a bar fight with a group of other soldiers. As the investigation progresses, Hank and Emily uncover a web of lies and deceit surrounding Mike’s disappearance, and begin to realize that his disappearance may be connected to his recent service in Iraq.
The investigation takes a dramatic turn when Hank and Emily discover a video that Mike had recorded prior to his disappearance. In the video, Mike reveals that he and his fellow soldiers had been involved in a horrific war crime in Iraq, and that he was struggling to cope with the guilt of his actions.
