Synopsis/Plot
In the Heat of the Night is a 1967 American mystery drama film directed by Norman Jewison and based on John Ball’s 1965 novel of the same name. The film stars Sidney Poitier as Virgil Tibbs, a black Philadelphia detective who becomes involved in a murder investigation in a small town in Mississippi. The film also stars Rod Steiger as the town’s white police chief, who initially mistrusts Tibbs but comes to respect him as the investigation unfolds.
The film follows Tibbs as he arrives in the small town of Sparta, Mississippi, after a long train journey. He is arrested by the local police chief, Gillespie, who believes Tibbs is the prime suspect in a murder investigation. After Tibbs reveals his identity as a Philadelphia detective, Gillespie reluctantly allows him to assist in the investigation. The two men soon discover a trail of clues that leads them to the real murderer. Along the way, they must confront the town’s deep-seated racism and Tibbs’ own personal prejudices.
The film was a critical and commercial success, and was nominated for seven Academy Awards, winning five. It was praised for its timely exploration of racial tensions in the United States, and it has been credited with helping
