Synopsis/Plot
In the Heart of the Sea is an epic adventure drama film directed by Ron Howard, based on the novel of the same name by Nathaniel Philbrick. The film tells the story of the sinking of the whaleship Essex in 1820, and its crew’s desperate struggle for survival.
The film stars Chris Hemsworth as the first mate of the Essex, Owen Chase, and Cillian Murphy as the second mate, Matthew Joy. The crew of the Essex, led by the experienced Captain George Pollard (Benjamin Walker), sets sail on a routine whaling mission. However, they soon find themselves in the path of a gargantuan sperm whale that attacks and sinks the ship.
The crew is forced to abandon theEssex and take to the lifeboats, where they drift for 90 days in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. With no food or water, the crew is pushed to the brink of madness and death. In their desperate attempt to survive, they resort to extreme measures, including cannibalism.
The film follows the crew as they battle the elements, their own fears, and the whale that changed their lives forever. In the end, the crew must face their own dark pasts in order to survive.
