Synopsis/Plot
In Darkness is a 2011 drama-thriller directed by Agnieszka Holland. The film is based on the true story of Leopold Socha, a Polish sewer worker and thief who risked his life to save a group of Jews during World War II.
The story begins in Lvov, Poland, in 1943, as the Nazis are deporting Jews to concentration camps. Socha, a sewer worker and petty thief, discovers a group of Jewish refugees hiding in the sewers beneath the city. Initially, Socha is only interested in the money he can make from the Jews in exchange for his help. But as the Nazis become more determined to find the Jews, Socha is forced to make a difficult decision: will he turn the Jews in for the reward money, or will he risk his own life to save them?
The film follows Socha and his wife, as they struggle to keep the Jews hidden and safe in the sewers. They must face the constant threat of discovery, as well as the psychological toll of living underground for months on end.
