Synopsis/Plot
Imitation of Life is a 1959 American melodrama film directed by Douglas Sirk and starring Lana Turner, John Gavin, Sandra Dee, and Juanita Moore. The film is based on Fannie Hurst’s 1933 novel of the same name. It follows the lives of two single mothers, one white and one black, and their daughters.
Lana Turner plays Lora Meredith, a struggling white actress who is trying to make it in Hollywood. She meets Annie Johnson (Juanita Moore), a black single mother who is looking for a job. Lora helps Annie find work and the two become close friends, with Lora becoming a surrogate mother to Annie’s young daughter, Sarah Jane (Susan Kohner).
Meanwhile, Lora’s own daughter, Susie (Sandra Dee), is struggling to find her place in the world. She is ashamed of her mother’s poverty and her mixed-race friend, and she is desperate to fit in with the popular crowd at school.
The film follows the struggles of both families as they navigate the changing social landscape of 1950s America. Lora struggles to make it as an actress, while Annie is determined to provide a better life for her daughter.
