Synopsis – What to Expect from “If Beale Street Could Talk”
If Beale Street Could Talk follows the story of two young African American lovers, Tish and Fonny, who are forced to confront the racism and injustice of the 1970s in order to stay together.
The story begins with Tish Rivers (Kiki Layne) and Fonny Hunt (Stephan James) as two young lovers living in Harlem. They have been together since they were teenagers and are deeply in love. However, their lives are thrown into chaos when Fonny is arrested and accused of a crime he did not commit. Fonny is taken to jail and Tish is left to try and prove his innocence.
With the help of her family, Tish sets out to prove Fonny’s innocence, but is met with many obstacles. She is faced with the racism and injustice of the criminal justice system, as well as the harsh realities of poverty. Despite the odds, Tish is determined to find a way to free Fonny and keep their love alive.
Meanwhile, Fonny is struggling to survive in jail. He is constantly harassed by inmates and guards, and his only solace is in his memories of Tish. As Tish continues to fight for his freedom, Fonny’s faith in their love is tested.
