Synopsis/Plot
I Love You Phillip Morris is a 2009 American black comedy-drama film based on the true story of con artist, impostor, and multiple prison escapee Steven Jay Russell, played by Jim Carrey. The film follows Russell’s journey through the Texas criminal justice system as he falls in love with his fellow inmate, Phillip Morris, played by Ewan McGregor.
The film begins with Russell, a married man, coming to terms with his homosexuality. He leaves his wife and embarks on a life of crime, using his intelligence and wit to con people out of money and goods. After being arrested and sentenced to prison, he meets Phillip Morris and the two quickly fall in love. Despite being in a relationship, Russell continues to commit crimes in order to fund his lifestyle and to pay for Morris’ legal fees.
The film follows Russell’s attempts to escape from prison and his many cons, as well as the relationship between he and Morris. The two lovers must find a way to stay together despite the obstacles and dangers they face. Along the way, they experience a roller coaster of emotions, from joy and love to fear and despair.
