I Am a Fugitive from a Chain Gang is a 1932 American pre-Code crime drama film directed by Mervyn LeRoy, starring Paul Muni as a wrongfully convicted convict on a chain gang who escapes to Chicago.
The film begins with James Allen (Paul Muni) as a World War I veteran returning home to Chicago with dreams of success. He takes a job at a construction site and meets a young woman, Marie (Glenda Farrell), who works at a nearby cafe. The two fall in love and plan to marry, but Allen is arrested for a crime he didn’t commit and sent to a brutal chain gang in the South.
Allen struggles to endure the harsh conditions of the chain gang and eventually escapes. He makes his way back to Chicago, where he begins a new life as a successful businessman. However, his past catches up with him and he is soon arrested and convicted for his escape. Facing a long prison sentence, Allen decides to flee the law and go on the run.
He finds work at a series of odd jobs, but his past continues to haunt him. He is eventually caught and sentenced to life in prison. Despite the odds, Allen manages to escape again and makes his way back to Chicago, where he lives as a fugitive.
Throughout his journey, Allen faces difficult moral dilemmas and is forced to confront his own inner demons. His experiences teach him that the only way to truly be free is
