Synopsis – What to Expect from “Hunger”
“Hunger” is a powerful drama set in Northern Ireland in 1981. It tells the story of Bobby Sands, a young Irish Republican Army (IRA) volunteer and hunger striker, and his fight to gain political status for IRA prisoners.
The story begins with Bobby Sands (Michael Fassbender) in the Maze Prison in Belfast, where he is serving a fourteen-year sentence for possession of explosives. Despite the harsh conditions in the prison, Bobby remains determined to fight for the rights of the prisoners and to gain political status. He and his fellow prisoners launch a hunger strike in an effort to force the government to recognize their political status.
The hunger strike quickly gains attention and Bobby becomes a symbol of the struggle for freedom. He is supported by his family and friends, as well as by the Irish people. However, the British government refuses to negotiate and Bobby’s health quickly deteriorates.
As Bobby’s health deteriorates, his family and friends struggle to keep him alive. They are also faced with the difficult decision of whether to keep Bobby alive at all costs, or to let him die in order to make a political statement.
The film follows Bobby’s struggle and his eventual death, as well as the aftermath of his death and the impact it had on the struggle for freedom in Northern Ireland. Despite the tragic ending, the film is ultimately a celebration of Bobby’s courage and determination and his fight for freedom.
