Synopsis – What to Expect from “Hoodlum”
Hoodlum is a 1997 crime drama set in 1930s Harlem. The story follows Bumpy Johnson (Laurence Fishburne), a notorious gangster who is trying to keep a lid on the escalating gang wars between his own gang and a rival gang led by Dutch Schultz (Tim Roth).
When Schultz begins to make moves to take over the Harlem numbers racket, Bumpy is forced to take action and protect his turf. He enlists the help of his friend, Ellsworth “Bumpy” Rasin (Andy Garcia), an ex-con who has renounced his criminal ways and is now trying to make an honest living. With the help of his loyal gang, Bumpy and Ellsworth set out to take on Dutch and his thugs.
The two sides clash in a series of violent confrontations as Bumpy and Ellsworth try to outwit Dutch and his henchmen. As the stakes get higher, the violence increases and the stakes become even more dangerous.
In the end, Bumpy and Ellsworth must confront Dutch in a final showdown to decide the fate of Harlem and its criminal underworld. With the help of his loyal gang and Ellsworth’s newfound moral courage, Bumpy is able to prevail over Dutch and his thugs. The film ends with Bumpy and Ellsworth walking off into the sunset, having brought peace to Harlem.
