The cows enlist the help of a bumbling bounty hunter, Buck, to help them capture a notorious cattle rustler, Alameda Slim. Along the way, the cows make friends with a wise old stallion named Buck, a kooky goose named Mrs. Featherbottom, and a wise-cracking rabbit named Junior.
The cows travel across the range, encountering many obstacles and challenges along the way. Eventually, they are able to capture Alameda Slim and save the farm. The cows are praised as heroes and the farm is saved from foreclosure. The movie ends with the cows happily living on the Patch of Heaven farm, singing the song “Home on the Range”.
