H.G. Wells’ War of the Worlds is a 2005 science fiction action-adventure film directed by Steven Spielberg, starring Tom Cruise, Dakota Fanning, and Tim Robbins. The film is a loose adaptation of H.G. Wells’ 1898 novel of the same name, and follows the adventures of Ray Ferrier, a divorced dock worker and father of two, as he attempts to protect his children from an alien invasion of Earth.
The film begins with Ray Ferrier (Tom Cruise) going to pick up his children, Robbie (Justin Chatwin) and Rachel (Dakota Fanning), from their mother’s home. On the way back, a strange storm appears, and Ray and his children witness a huge tripod-like machine emerge from the ground. Ray takes his children and flees, only to find that the machines have been sent by aliens from Mars, and they are intent on destroying the human race.
Ray and his children seek refuge in a deserted basement, but they are soon forced to flee again as the machines continue to ravage the countryside. Ray, his children, and a small group of survivors make their way across the country, trying to stay one step ahead of the aliens. Along the way, they encounter other survivors, some of whom are not so friendly.
