Synopsis/Plot
Hero is a 2002 Chinese martial arts film written, produced, and directed by Zhang Yimou. The film stars Jet Li as the nameless protagonist, an assassin who is determined to kill the King of Qin, the first emperor of China, in order to end the oppressive Qin dynasty. The film follows the story of the protagonist’s journey to his ultimate goal, as he meets a series of characters who challenge his beliefs and his ultimate mission.
The film opens with the protagonist arriving in the city of Xianyang, the capital of Qin. Here he meets Broken Sword (Tony Leung Chiu-Wai), a man who was once a great swordsman before he was crippled in battle. Broken Sword tells the protagonist of his past and how he was betrayed by his closest friend, Flying Snow (Maggie Cheung).
The protagonist then travels to Mt. Taishi, where he meets Moon (Zhang Ziyi), a woman who is the daughter of the King’s advisor. Moon and the protagonist fall in love, and she helps him to understand the King’s motives and his desire for peace.
