Synopsis – What to Expect from “Henry V”
Henry V is a 1989 British historical drama film adapted for the screen and directed by Kenneth Branagh, based on William Shakespeare’s play of the same name. The film tells the story of King Henry V of England, focusing on events immediately before and after the Battle of Agincourt during the Hundred Years’ War.
The film begins with a prologue in which Henry (Kenneth Branagh) is shown as a young prince, full of life and vigor. He is shown to be a rambunctious youth, full of energy and ambition. He is determined to prove himself to his father, King Henry IV (Brian Blessed).
The film then moves to the battlefield of Agincourt, where Henry is leading his army against the French. He gives a rousing speech to his troops, inspiring them to fight for their country and their king.
The film then follows Henry as he leads his troops into battle. The battle is bloody and brutal, and Henry’s forces are outnumbered. However, through Henry’s leadership and the courage of his men, they manage to defeat the French and win the day.
The film then moves forward in time, as Henry’s reign begins to take shape. He is shown to be a wise and just ruler, and his subjects love him. He also begins to court the French princess, Catherine of Valois (Emma Thompson).
The film then shows Henry’s marriage to Catherine and their life together.
