Synopsis – What to Expect from “Heaven’s Gate”
Heaven’s Gate is a 1980 American epic Western film written and directed by Michael Cimino. It stars Kris Kristofferson, Christopher Walken, John Hurt, Sam Waterston, and Isabelle Huppert.
The film is set in the late 19th century in Johnson County, Wyoming, and is based on the Johnson County War, a dispute between wealthy cattle barons and European immigrants. It follows the story of James Averill (Kris Kristofferson), a Harvard-educated lawman appointed as a federal marshal to protect the immigrants from the barons’ hired guns.
The film begins with Averill and his deputy, Billy Irvine (Christopher Walken), traveling to Johnson County to investigate reports of a range war between the barons and the immigrants. Upon their arrival, they discover that the barons, led by Frank Canton (John Hurt), have hired a ruthless band of mercenaries to drive the immigrants out of the area. Averill and Irvine attempt to intervene, but their efforts are thwarted by the barons’ hired guns.
Averill then meets Ella Watson (Isabelle Huppert), a former prostitute who has become a leader of the immigrants. Ella and Averill fall in love, and she helps him to organize a militia to fight the barons and their mercenaries.
