Synopsis/Plot
Harvey is a 1950 American comedy-drama film based on Mary Chase’s Pulitzer Prize-winning play of the same name. The film stars James Stewart as Elwood P. Dowd, a good-natured man who enjoys spending time with his best friend, an invisible 6-foot-tall rabbit named Harvey. Elwood’s family and the local townsfolk are perplexed by his insistence that Harvey is real, and his sister Veta Louise (Josephine Hull) is determined to have him committed to a sanitarium to spare the family from embarrassment.
The film follows Elwood and Veta as they navigate the complexities of the sanitarium’s bureaucracy and the attempts of Dr. Sanderson (Charles Drake) and Nurse Kelly (Peggy Dow) to have Elwood committed. Along the way, Elwood meets a variety of characters, including a young doctor (Jesse White) who is eager to learn from Elwood’s unique outlook on life.
Ultimately, Elwood’s charm and good nature win out, and he is released from the sanitarium. He and Harvey continue to enjoy their life together, and Elwood’s family and the townsfolk come to accept Harvey as a part of
