Synopsis/Plot
Harriet is a 2019 biographical drama film directed by Kasi Lemmons, and starring Cynthia Erivo in the title role of Harriet Tubman, an African-American abolitionist and political activist. The film follows Tubman’s life, from her escape from slavery in the early 19th century to her later work as a conductor on the Underground Railroad, helping to lead other slaves to freedom.
The film begins with Tubman’s birth into slavery in Maryland in 1822, and shows her early life under the oppressive hand of her owners. After an incident with a slave owner, Tubman decides to take her freedom into her own hands and escapes to Philadelphia. Once there, she meets a group of abolitionists, who help her find her way to freedom.
Tubman then embarks on a dangerous journey to lead other slaves to freedom, working as a conductor on the Underground Railroad. She faces many obstacles, including slave hunters and treacherous terrain, but her courage and faith remain unshaken. She leads hundreds of slaves to freedom, and eventually becomes an active political figure, advocating for the rights of African-Americans.
