Synopsis – What to Expect from “Hard Times”
Hard Times is a 1975 American drama film directed by Walter Hill and starring Charles Bronson, James Coburn, and Jill Ireland. Set in the 1930s, it tells the story of Chaney (Bronson), a tough-as-nails drifter who arrives in New Orleans looking for work. He soon finds himself in the middle of a turf war between two rival gangs, led by Speed (Coburn) and Chaney’s old friend, Little Bob (Ireland). As the violence escalates, Chaney is forced to choose between his loyalty to Little Bob and his desire to make a living.
The film begins with Chaney arriving in New Orleans and finding work as a bare-knuckle fighter. He quickly makes a name for himself in the underground fighting circuit, taking on all challengers and winning every match. Meanwhile, Speed and Little Bob are locked in a bitter rivalry over control of the city’s criminal underworld. Speed has been using a local gang of thugs to intimidate and extort money from local businesses, while Little Bob has been trying to protect them from Speed’s brutality.
When Speed’s gang attempts to extort money from a local bar, Chaney steps in to protect the bar’s owner. This leads to a showdown between the two gangs, and Chaney finds himself in the middle of the conflict. Speed offers Chaney a job as his enforcer, but Chaney refuses
