Synopsis – What to Expect from “Hamlet”
Hamlet is a 1990 film adaptation of William Shakespeare’s classic play of the same name, directed by Franco Zeffirelli and starring Mel Gibson as the titular character.
The story follows Hamlet, the Prince of Denmark, who is grieving the death of his father. He is further distraught to discover that his mother, Gertrude, has married his uncle Claudius, who has assumed the throne in the wake of his brother’s death.
Hamlet’s grief is further compounded when he is visited by the ghost of his father, who tells him that Claudius murdered him in order to seize the throne. Now, Hamlet must decide whether to avenge his father’s death or to let justice take its course.
In the meantime, he must also contend with his own inner turmoil, as well as the romantic entanglements of his beloved Ophelia, who is being courted by his friend Laertes.
As the story progresses, Hamlet’s mental state begins to deteriorate, and his actions become increasingly erratic and violent. In the end, a series of tragic events leads to a bloody and devastating conclusion.
