Synopsis – What to Expect from “Hairspray Live!”
Hairspray Live! is a live television musical broadcast on NBC. It is based on the 2002 Broadway musical of the same name, which in turn was based on the 1988 John Waters film Hairspray.
The story follows the adventures of Tracy Turnblad, a teenage girl living in Baltimore, Maryland in 1962. She dreams of being a dancer on the popular Corny Collins Show, a local television dance program. When she finally gets her chance to audition, she wows the judges and becomes an overnight sensation.
However, Tracy’s newfound fame brings her into conflict with the show’s reigning princess, Amber Von Tussle, and her mother Velma, who are determined to keep Tracy off the show. Meanwhile, Tracy and her friends use their newfound fame to fight for integration on the Corny Collins Show, which is still segregated.
The musical follows Tracy’s journey as she struggles to integrate the show, make friends, and ultimately find true love. Along the way, she faces a variety of obstacles, including the prejudice of the adults in her life and the pressures of fame.
The musical features a variety of popular songs, including the title track “Hairspray”, as well as “Welcome to the 60s” and “Good Morning Baltimore”.
