Synopsis – What to Expect from “Hair”
Hair is a 1979 American musical comedy-drama film directed by Miloš Forman and based on the 1967 Broadway musical Hair: An American Tribal Love-Rock Musical by Gerome Ragni, James Rado, and Galt MacDermot.
The film follows Claude Hooper Bukowski (John Savage), a naive Oklahoman who is drafted into the United States Army during the Vietnam War. Claude meets and befriends a “tribe” of hippies on his way to the army induction center, and falls in love with a beautiful girl named Sheila (Beverly D’Angelo).
Claude’s newfound friends, including the charismatic Berger (Treat Williams) and the eccentric Sheila, introduce him to the ideals of the 1960s counterculture. The group of young hippies advocate for peace, love, and civil disobedience, while Claude struggles to reconcile his conservative upbringing with his newfound beliefs.
Meanwhile, Claude’s commanding officer, Captain Bartholomew (Charles Durning), is determined to make Claude a model soldier, and is frustrated by his new recruit’s refusal to conform to military regulations. As Claude’s time in the army progresses, he is faced with a series of moral dilemmas, including whether or not to take part in the war, and how to balance his own beliefs with his duty to the country.
