The film begins with Louise and her sister June, who are growing up in the care of their mother Rose, a domineering stage mother. Rose is determined to make June a successful vaudeville star, but Louise is determined to follow her own dreams. She eventually runs away from home to pursue her dream of becoming a burlesque dancer.
Meanwhile, Rose is determined to make June a star and she is willing to do whatever it takes to make it happen. She manipulates her daughters and her family to get what she wants. She eventually lands June a starring role in a Broadway show, but Louise is still determined to make it as a burlesque dancer.
Louise meets Herbie, a charming and kind-hearted theatrical agent, who helps her land a job as a burlesque dancer. As Louise continues to pursue her dream, she also discovers a talent for singing, and she eventually lands a role in a Broadway show.
