Synopsis – What to Expect from “Gunga Din”
Gunga Din is a classic adventure film released in 1939, starring Cary Grant, Victor McLaglen, and Douglas Fairbanks, Jr. Set in India during the British Raj, the film follows three British soldiers and a water-carrier, Gunga Din, as they battle the Thuggee cult.
The film begins in India with three British soldiers, Sergeant Cutter (Cary Grant), Sergeant Ballantine (Victor McLaglen), and Lieutenant MacChesney (Douglas Fairbanks, Jr.). They are sent to investigate reports of a Thuggee cult uprising in the area. Along the way, they meet Gunga Din (Sam Jaffe), a water-carrier who dreams of joining the British army. Despite his lowly status, Gunga Din proves to be a loyal and courageous companion to the three soldiers.
When the soldiers finally reach the Thuggee stronghold, they discover that the cultists are planning to attack a nearby British outpost. With the help of Gunga Din, the soldiers manage to warn the outpost in time and defeat the Thuggee in a fierce battle. During the fight, Gunga Din is seriously wounded while trying to warn the British of an impending attack. Despite his injuries, Gunga Din continues to fight and is ultimately rewarded for his bravery by being granted the rank of sergeant in the British army.
