McGuire is forced to move away from his family and friends to avoid being arrested. He takes a job as a janitor in a small town and begins to rebuild his life. He meets a young schoolteacher, Katherine Grant (Annette Bening), and soon falls in love with her.
Despite his attempts to keep his past a secret, his past catches up with him when he is arrested by the FBI. His friends and family come to his aid and help him to prove his innocence.
